PM Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech: Highlights

Making a pitch for retaining power in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday presented a picture of “rising” India and contrasted it with what he termed as “policy paralysis” during the UPA rule.

Kerala reels under its worst floods

A resurgent monsoon brought Kerala to its knees on Wednesday, with the State tottering under the worst floods in its history. Submerged by floodwaters, cities and villages lay crippled as the circle of destruction widened.

It is the first time in its history all five gates of the Idukki Dam were opened at the same time and also 35 out of 39 reservoirs in the state were opened.

PM Modi announces manned space mission taking Indian astronauts to space on board 'Gaganyaan' by 2022

ISRO Chairman K Sivan has reciprocated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day announcement that an Indian astronaut will be sent into space by 2022 on board Gaganyaan. Addressing media persons in Bengaluru today, the Chairman said, ISRO is ready to carry out the task entrusted to it by the Prime Minister.

  • Gaganyaan, the human space flight programme was green-flagged and is set for 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • ISRO said the mission is achievable, as most of the critical technologies are ready
  • The mission is estimated at ₹9,000 crore.
  • In 1984, India’s first astronaut Wing Commander (retd.) Rakesh Sharma orbited Earth as part of a Soviet mission.
  • Amendment to Delhi Special Police Establishment Act

    • Parliament passed certain amendments to laws on corruption, which could have a far reaching effect.

    BSNL launches VOIP based phone service - WINGS

    Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched BSNL WINGS a VOIP based service. In WINGS, there is no SIM or cable wiring as is a VOIP service through an app. The WINGS service offers unlimited free audio/video calling for one year. The service can be activ BSNL WINGS a VOIP ated with a one-time fee of Rs. 1,099 (Rs 1,297 with GST).

  • Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passes Away

    Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died today in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi after a long illness. The 93-year-old BJP leader was s uffering from multiple ailments and was admitted to AIIMS in June. He was put on life support system by the doctors after his condition became critical in the last 24 hours.

    Three-time Prime Minister, Vajpayee was the first and the only non-Congress Prime Minister to serve a full five-year term from 1999 to 2004; and for short periods of 13 days in 1996 and 13 months in 1998. Vajpayee was elected to Lok Sabha from Lucknow in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004.
