Government Notifies Electoral Bond Scheme 2018

Government notified the Electoral Bond Scheme 2018 via Gazette Notification. As per provisions of the Scheme, Electoral Bonds may be purchased by a person, who is a citizen of India or incorporated or established in India.

Electoral Bonds shall be encashed by an eligible Political Party only through a Bank account with the Authorized Bank.

Suresh Prabhu launches 'ReUnite' Mobile App

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu on June 29, 2018 launched a mobile application ‘ReUnite’ to track and trace missing and abandoned children in India.

The app has been developed jointly by NGO ‘Bachpan Bachao Andolan’ and IT major Capgemini.

  • The app will work to reunite parents with their children who have gone missing.
  • The app is multiuser where parents and citizens can upload pictures of children, and provide detailed description like name, birth mark, address, report to the police station, search and identify missing kids.
  • Every year, around 44,000 children go missing in the country, of which, just 11000 are rescued.
  • Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) is an NGO and India’s largest movement for the protection of children and works along with law enforcement agencies and policymakers.
  • BBA pioneered the first consulted effort in the country on the issue of missing children and its linkages with trafficking in the case involving missing children of Nithari in 2006. The case led the Supreme Court pass the landmark judgement in 2013 ordering that FIR has to be lodged in all cases of missing children.

    Rupee falls to all-time low of 69.09 against US dollar

    The rupee hit the all-time low of 69.09 against the US dollar on June 28, 2018, falling past 69 mark for the first time ever. The previous record low of rupee was 68.86 on November 24, 2016.

    The rupee opened at an all-time low of 68.89 against the US Dollar. On June 27, 2018, it ended at 68.63, the worst ever closing since August 28, 2013, when it hit a record closing low of 68.82. The fall can be attributed to the week-long rise in the crude prices amid concerns of higher inflation and current account deficit.

    Mumbai's Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles Inscribed As UNESCO World Heritage Site

    Mumbai's Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was announced at the Unesco world heritage committee meeting in Bahrain.

    The Heritage enclave is situated in South Mumbai’s historic core and comprises an urban ensemble straddling two heritage precincts of the Fort Precinct and Marine Drive Precinct.

    Ministry of Women and Child Development Organises POSHAN Abhiyaan TECH-THON

    With an aim to integrate information technology for better roll out of its major social sector schemes, Ministry of Woman and Child Development organized a day-long Seminar on Technology Partnerships for Steering POSHAN Abhiyaan called 'TECH-THON'.

    PM’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment (POSHAN) Abhiyan strive to reduce the level of stunting, under-nutrition, anemia and low birth weight babies.

  • It targets to reduce stunting, undernutrition, anemia and reduce low birth weight by 2%, 2%, 3% and 2% per annum respectively.
  • Mission 25 by 2022 – Although it targets to reduce stunting by 2%, Mission would strive to achieve reduction in Stunting from 38.4% (NFHS-4) to 25% by 2022.
  • Behavior change communication is the key component of POSHAN Abhiyaan for converting it into Jan Andolan (People’s movement).
  • ICDS- Common Application Software has been specially designed to strengthen the Service Delivery System as well as the mechanism for Real-Time Monitoring for nutritional outcomes.

    RBL Bank acquired Mumbai Based Swadhaar FinServe

    RBL Bank has raised its stake in Swadhaar Finserve Pvt. Ltd to 100% from 60.48%. The bank has bought the stake it did not own from US-based non-profit Accion. Swadhaar FinServe started operations as a non-banking finance company in 2008.

    It subsequently converted into an NBFC-MFI. It became a business correspondent for RBL Bank in 2014 and transferred its microcredit portfolio to the bank. In November 2017, RBL Bank increased its stake in Swadhaar to 60.48%.

    Pakistan in Grey List

    • Financial Action Task Force in its recently concluded meet in Paris agreed to implement the decision adopted earlier in February to place Pakistan in grey list.
    • Previously, Pakistan has been placed in grey list from 2012 -2015.
    • Following the grey listing if Islamabad does not comply with the FATF blueprint, it could be moved to the black list next year.

    N Korea:’worst human trafficking country’

    • According to the annual ‘2018 Trafficking in Persons Report’, North Korea has been ranked as worst human trafficking country in the world, along with China, Russia and Iran.
    • The report said that the North Korean govt continued to use forced labour in prison camps.
    • South Korea has been ranked at the highest category for the 16th consecutive year, along with US, UK, France and Canada.

    NASA To Launch World's Lightest Satellite Designed By Chennai Students

    The four first-year engineering students from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science near Chennai, Tamil Nadu have developed the world’s lightest satellite which will be launched from a NASA facility in the US by August 2018.

    The students built the 4cm ‘cube’ satellite ‘Jaihind-1S’ with a 3D printed outer casing from polylactic acid (PLA) nylon material, making it lighter than a medium sized egg, at just 33.39 grams.

    Rani Rampal to lead India in Women's Hockey World Cup

    Rani Rampal named as the captain of India's 18-member squad for the women's hockey World Cup to be played in London next month.

    Hockey India announced the 18-member Indian women's team for the prestigious tournament which is slated to begin on July 21.

    India's defence will consist of Sunita Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka, Deepika, drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur and youngster Reena Khokhar who makes a comeback into the team.

    Dutee Chand Sets New National Record In Women’s 100m

    India sprinter Dutee Chand set a new national record in the women’s 100-metre race when she clocked 11.29 seconds at the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships being held at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati.

    The 22-year-old achieved the feat when she finished first in heat two of the semi-final round of the women’s 100m sprint.

    The previous record of 11.30 seconds was also held by Dutee, which she achieved at the Indian Grand Prix last year. Dutee has qualified for the Asian Games in 100m and 200m by breaching the qualifying timings at the Inter State Championships.

    Ryugu Asteroid

    • A Japanese Probe “Hayabusa2” has recently reached “Ryugu”, an asteroid 300 million km away from Earth.
    • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA has launched the probe in 2014.
    • The aim of the mission is  to collect information about the birth of the solar system and the origin of life.
    • It identify suitable sites to take samples from once the probe touches down on the asteroid.
    • It will deploy a small lander and three rovers.
    • It will then blast an artificial crater to analyze material below the asteroid's surface. After that, the probe will head back to Earth, arriving near the end of 2020 with samples in tow.
