Every village now has access to electricity

India has electrified all its villages 12 days ahead of a deadline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • Government data showed that all of India's 597,464 census villages have now been electrified.
  • The last village to be brought on the national power grid was Leisang village in the Senapati district of Manipur.

Centre to launch National Disaster Database

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), with the help of UNISDR, UNDP and Unicef, is organising its first workshop on the proposed national disaster database in the Capital on May 2 where representatives of all states, central ministries and departments will participate.

The proposed integrated database will track impacts of hazards such as death, injury, affected population by categories, economic losses in sectors such as education, health, housing, agriculture, industries, critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges and building, cultural heritages, etc,

According to UNISDR, India ranks among the top four countries in the world with highest number of reported disasters.

The national database will for the first time indicate its official data on actual losses.

Sikkim's Pawan Chamling Becomes India's Longest-Serving Chief Minister

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling became the longest-serving chief minister of any state as he completed 25 uninterrupted years in office. He broke the record of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, who held office for 23 years.

The founding president of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) became chief minister in December 1994.

With the slogan "New Sikkim, Happy Sikkim", he launched policies and programmes to transform the state.

In 1993, Mr Chamling formed the Sikkim Democratic Front Party.

International Buddhist meet begins in Lumbini

In Nepal International Buddhist Conference concluded in Lumbini, the birth place of Gautama Buddha this evening.

A two-day International Buddhist conference to mark the 2,562th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha began on 28 April 2018. The basic objective of the conference was to disseminate teachings of Gautam Buddha and spread the messages of nonviolence, brotherhood, co-existence, love and peace to the international community.

North Korea to rejoin South’s time zone

North Korea will move its clocks 30 minutes forward to unify with the South's time zone starting this Saturday as a conciliatory gesture after last week's inter-Korean summit.

The two countries on the divided peninsula have had different time zones since 2015 when the North suddenly changed its standard time to 30 minutes behind the South.

North Korea's parliament on Monday adopted a decree to return to the same time zone as South Korea from May 5.

Paytm introduces 'Tap Card' offline payments solution

One97 Communications Limited, the owner of digital payment major, Paytm, announced the launch of its offline payments solution - the Paytm Tap Card, in line with the company's vision to provide seamless payments solutions for non-internet customers.

  • This card uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to enable safe and convenient digital payments, completely offline at Paytm-issued, NFC PoS terminals, in under a second.
  • Paytm Tap Card is a solution that also addresses any network-related concerns at the consumers' or merchants' end.
  • Paytm is partnering with educational institutes and corporates in the first phase to enable quick digital payments using this card
  • The customer has to simply tap the card at a merchant terminal to pay, offering them a mode of payment through Paytm even while they are not carrying their phones.

CSIR awarded National Intellectual Property Award 2018

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was on Thursday awarded the National Intellectual Property (IP) Award 2018 in the category 'Top R&D Institution/Organisation for Patents and Commercialisation'.

CSIR Laboratories have been developing and providing technology focused at the unmet need and the cutting edge knowledge base and human resource on the other for socio-economic development in the country

The CSIR has been ranked ninth in the world among the 1,207 government institutions, with an overall global ranking of 75 in the world, covering 5,250 institutions, as per the statement.

India wins South Asian U-12 Qualifying Tennis Tournament

  • India has won the South Asian Under-12 Qualifying Tennis Tournament, defeating host Nepal in the finals.
  • Indian girls and boys team defeated their Nepali opponents in the final by 2-0.
  • Now both the Indian teams will participate in ITF Asian 12 and Under Team Championship to be played in Kazakhstan later this year.

Prajnesh wins maiden singles title on Challenger circuit

Prajnesh Gunneswaran has clinched his first ever singles tennis title on the ATP Challenger circuit.

  • The 28-year-old from Chennai pocketed 21,600 US Dollars and earned 125 points.
  • India will now have three players inside top-200 as Prajnesh is expected to be around 175. Yuki Bhambri leads the chart for the country at number 83 and is followed by Ramkumar Ramanathan at the 115 position.

India’s CA Bhavani Devi wins silver at Satellite Fencing Championship

India's C A Bhavani Devi won a silver medal in the sabre event of the Tournoi World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The Tamil Nadu fencer went down 10-15 to USA's Alexis Browne in the final

Bhavani Devi had won a gold medal at the Reykjavik tournament last year to become the first Indian win to do so in an international fencing event.

Peace Mission

  • India and Pakistan will participate together for the first time in a multi-nation counter-terrorism exercise in Russia later this year.
  • The military exercise is being conducted by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
  • The drill will also see the resumption of bilateral military exercise between India and China.
  • It is termed as “Peace Mission”, which will be held at the Ural Mountains of Russia.
  • Its main aim will be to enhance counter-terror cooperation among the eight SCO member countries.
  • India and Pakistan were admitted as full members of the bloc last year.
  • At present, SCO represents over 40 per cent of humanity and nearly 20 per cent of the global GDP.
