ISRO to launch communication satellite GSAT-6A

In the field of space technology, India will close this fiscal with the launch of the GSAT-6A, a high power S-band communication satellite, on March 29, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Friday. According to the space agency,

GSAT-6A
  • GSAT-6A was similar to the GSAT-6
  • The satellite will provide a platform for developing technologies such as demonstration of 6m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques.
  • The satellite life span of around 10 years will be put into orbit by the Indian rocket, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F08).

UIDAI to roll out face recognition for AADHAR

The Unique Identification Authority of India has announced to roll-out face authentication feature by July 1 2018 to add another layer of security for inclusive authentication of Aadhaar card holders and avoid the issues regarding fingerprint authentication.

Advantage of face recognition feature

  • Provide additional choice to those facing issues with their fingerprint or iris authentication.
  • Face-feature with liveness detection can be used as an additional tool to increase security.

Face authentication will only be used along with the fusion of previous authentication tool –fingerprint, iris scan or OTP authentication.

Lithium-ion Cells

BHEL recently entered into a technology transfer agreement with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the manufacturing of space-grade lithium-ion cells of various capacities. BHEL will utilise technology developed by ISRO at its Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)

  • ISRO uses Li-Ion batteries as power sources for satellite and launch vehicle applications due to their high energy density, reliability and long cycle life.
  • These cells are currently being used for various satellite and launch vehicle applications.
  • Lithium ion batteries are more reliable than older technologies such as nickel-cadmium.
  • Lithium-ion batteries don't contain cadmium, a toxic, heavy metal.
  • It is used in every modern cell phone, laptop, tablet, and most other rechargeable gadgets.

Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity with a history of violent eruptions.
